Plot:
Well, you all know the original 1943 version (uploaded by Nikko not so long ago) by Akira Kurosawa.
While he was finishing Red beard, Toho suggested him a remake.
He accepted the project with some conditions :
-full control on the cast & all productions aspects (he was so pleased by the shots he also decided to edit the film)
-chosing another director as he always refused to remake his own films.
This 2nd version is something like Sugata Sanshiro (1943) + his follow-up Zoku Sugata Sanshiro (1945) in one film, thus the length (152 minutes...).
The two major differences are :
-the american boxing part removed (no more military propaganda needed)
-the romance parts added (planned in the 1943 version, but not included due to military censorship).
A nice addition is the superb soundtrack by Masaru Sato, always in his western trip, but less parodic than the musics he wrote for Hideo Gosha (Samurai Wolf & al...) and even better (yep !) than he did for previous Kurosawa (Sanjuro/Yojimbo...)
Sadly, the film was a huge flop and it was forgotten during the next 40 years...
In 1995, a french editor heard about it and wanted to release a video. They contacted Toho...who replied that 1965 version didn't exist
After those arrogant frenchies sent a bunch of proofs, Toho made in depth searches and finally, a copy was found !
And thus, the video release and subsequent cinema distribution in France in 1999...and some years later, finally this french DVD.
