I've finally watched this till the end, I was originally put off by the fake look of the film, but I became fascinated by the love-making scene, the lovers caressing each other on a bed of roses to the sound of a repetitive but hypnotic classical Indian song (Ghazal?). I think the film can be appreciated like a work of Dreyer, slow motion, stylized.
edit: William's Dalrymple's historical research on the 1857 mutiny "The Last Mughal" inspired me to watch the film finally. He even mentions the film in his book.
