Sinopsis momentánea en inglés: Based on the famous semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by the May 4th writer and anarchist Ba Jin (1904-2005), this film depicts the decline of a large, wealthy family during the years 1919 to 1923. The story focuses on three brothers and their response to their family's expectation they will each marry women whom their grandfather has selected for them. The inevitable confilict between the traditional family and the modern individual is the major theme of May 4th literature. The novel had a considerable impact on the first generation that came of age in the 20th century, a group rebelling against such Confucian ideas as filial piety, female chastity, and arranged marriage.
