Winner of Best Picture and Best Actor at the 33rd Japan Academy Awards, The Sun That Doesn't Set (a.k.a. The Unbroken) is inspired by the events of the 1985 Japan Airlines Flight 123 tragedy, the second deadliest aviation accident in history. The media angle of the JAL123 tragedy was recently covered in the 2008 feature Climber's High. Based on Yamasaki Toyoko's best-selling novel, The Sun That Doesn't Set looks at the incident from the perspective of a sympathetic airline representative tasked to console and settle with the victims' families.

Acclaimed actor Watanabe Ken delivers an award-winning performance as airline union head Onchi Hajime whose fight to improve working conditions crosses the corporate honchos and gets him transferred out of Japan. He spends the next ten years working in branch offices in Pakistan, Iran, Kenya, and other far-off places. After years of trials, Onchi is finally called back to Japan - to deal with the country's worst aviation accident ever. Directed by Wakamatsu Setsurô (Whiteout), The Sun That Doesn't Set features an impressive supporting cast that includes Miura Tomokazu, Kagawa Teruyuki, Matsuyuki Yasuko, Suzuki Kyoka, Ishizaka Koji, Kimura Tae, and Toda Erika.
