In 2008, Heiward Mak surprised and impressed Hong Kong cinema fans with High Noon, a stylish and powerful look at the troubled youths of Hong Kong. For her follow-up film, the writer-director adapts her own novel with the help of actor Chapman To as producer. Led by a breakthrough performance by Twins' Gillian Chung (in the first step of a major comeback), Ex slowly weaves a complicated web of relationships between five Hong Kong twentysomethings, moving back and forth in time to chronicle the evolution of their relationships and their attitude towards relationships. Joining Gillian are William Chan (Beauty on Duty!) and Michelle Wai (Girl$), both achieving their career best under Heiward Mak's assured direction.

At the airport, Ping (William Chan) and his girlfriend Cee (Michelle Wai) overhear a couple's argument. Ping finds out that one of the people arguing is his ex-girlfriend Zhou Yi (Gillian Chung). Realizing that Zhou Yi has nowhere to go, Ping and the ever-considerate Cee take her in temporarily at their home. Through their conversations, Ping and Zhou Yi reminisce about their relationship, as well as the lovers that Zhou Yi's had since their break-up. Will their old feelings for each other flare up again?
