A Taiwanese adaptation of Gu Long's Ming Jian Feng Liu (roughly translated as The Sword & The Exquisiteness).

One of the most well-known Taiwanese production from the era, The Sword Named Revenge boosted a quite beautiful Taiwan landscapes, some popular Taiwanese casts, a good swordplay scenes and surprisingly a loyal adaptation of source story, at least for the first half of the film.

Now the lowdowns...

It's not easy to adapt one of Gu Long's earlier novels, simply because the novel is long, longer than an episodic novel like Chu Liuxiang or Lu Xiaofeng, where one film is often good enough to adapt one episode of their sagas. Fans of Gu Long also knows that the novel features some of the upper tier heroes in Gu Long's huge list of powerful characters, the novel is filled with imaginative energy blasting martial art techniques, good looking characters, and a horror, eerie like subplots, finally, not to be missed is the twist and turns and final revelation. although the novel's ending left much to be desired, it is still popular by Gu Long's fans. so can the movie close the ending better?

To begin, the movie started just like how it was in the novel, Yu Pei Yu was practicing his skills with his father, Yu Fanghe, when they were tricked by an assassin, as a result, Yu Pei Yu's father got heavily poison and passed away, Yu Peiyu in his deep confussion, run into Lin Daiyu, who seemed to understand his sudden change of fortune but could not reveal her sentiments. Shockingly, the next scene revealed that Yu Fanghe, Yu Pei Yu's father was shockingly still alive, healthy and 100% poison free. Yu Peiyu knew that something was wrong, this Yu Jianghe must be a fake and fled home in panic.

Heading into the Chancellor of Wulin election event, Yu Pei Yu was pursued but helped by a beggar, Hong Lianhua, to escape. At the chancelor of wulin's meeting, the fake Yu Pei Yu once again tried to be friendly to Yu Pei Yu. Thinking that Yu Peiyu, who obviously knew the man was a fake Yu Jianghe, was being unrespectful to his own father, the rest of wulin seniors actually helped fake Yu Fanghe to subdue Yu Pei Yu. Once again, Hong Linghua assisted him. Hong turned out to be the leader of the beggar clan.

Once again after more fights and attempts to kill him, Yu Pei Yu escaped only to end up in an eerie looking graveyard, when he saw an eerie looking woman (one of the Blossom sisters) dressed in all white singing an eerie sounding song, surprisingly another girl showed up (another one of the Blossom sisters)... One thought the other is a pyschotic girl... Ok still following the novel so far but five minutes later this is all going to change.

After a few shortened plot from the novel in this segment, instead of having Yu Pei Yu had a platic surgery done on him, in this movie, Yu Pei Yu ran away again and ended inside a hole, in the hall there's a martial arts manual, for those who thought the manual should be a palm blast martial art like in the novel, you are wrong. the manual is actually a sword manual left by Du Gu Qiu Bai. Wait that's Jin Yong, I thought this is based on a Gu Long novel... So the story was totally an abberation from the novel from here, until the end of the novel, when Yu Pei Yu confronts Yu Fanghe and his lackeys without Feng San and Old Man Gong, these two characters are totally eliminated. I don't remember if the Bloody Parrot appeared, as he made an apperance only in voice in the novel.

The most notable changes are converting all the cool sounding palm blast techniques in the novel into the swordplay, and those of Jin Yong as well. I cannot believe how much changes this adaptation made, one good thing is all the main characters are kept in tact, Lin Daiyu especially was quite pleasant to look at.

The sword play is nothing to write home about, your standard oldschool swordplay, Taiwanese style. The sceneries of Taiwanese mountains and hills were a joy to watch, though nothing was captured with the same mastery of King Hu's films, but I never said the film was trying to be one.

If you don't care about loyalty... which if you do, you'll be disappointed...

as a movie by itself and a rarety adaptation of Gu Long's Ming Jian Feng Liu...
