Released in 1959. The first part in Nikkatsu's Wataridori series.

This series unfolds as the main character, Shinji Taki (Kobayashi), wanders from town to town with a guitar on his back, fighting villains and breaking young girls hearts.

Guitar wo Motta Wataridori (The Rambling Guitarist) (Colour / 78 min)

The Wanderer finds his way to Hakodate. Taki, who carries a guitar on his back, hates to see the weak get bullied.
He was hired by a local couple that thought that he would be a good worker but was almost killed when he caught a glimpse of an unlawful transaction on a boat. His anger boils over! He fires his gun!

This movie is a rare find and hasn't been released outside of Japan as far as I'm aware of. No subs I'm afraid (none on the DVD), but even without them this movie is a must see for all true lovers of Japanese mafia movies.

The scene halfway through the movie where Joe Shishido (a.k.a. Ace no Joe) suddenly appears from underneath a coat which was lying on a chair is superb. This guy HAS to be the coolest Japanese movie star ever (he played the main part in Seijun Suzuki's Branded to Kill). Also the mafia boss who appears to enjoy giving blowjobs to his cigars is a real character.

Recently released on DVD as part of Nikkatsu's Dig the Nippon retro-classic-series, the image quality is great! I had the chance to see this one in a cinema in Japan a while back and the print had really degraded (murky and with a green hue throughout). Luckily Nikkatsu's done a great job of brushing this one up.

Película sencilla, corta y que, aunque con algunos "fallos" de guión, me deja satisfecho sin necesidad de ver más de la saga.

Lo que considero fallo de guión: que un tipo "buena gente" (expolicía, además) se meta conscientemente en la organización mafiosa y, para colmo, salga luego de rositas.
