«Plot:
In Our Time, a portmonteau film composed of four distinct episodes by four new directors, including the then-unknown Edward Yang, was produced in 1982. It represented the first break with the old, escapist style of Taiwanese filmmaking. The film is a review of the many ways in which life changed in Taiwan over the three decades from the 60's through the 80's. Unlike standard Taiwanese fare, this film cast non- or semi-professional actors instead of famous stars and did not follow a traditional narrative structure or fit into any usual genre. Because of these innovations, In Our Time is generally accepted as the starting point of the Taiwanese New Cinema Movement.
Section 1 (Dir. Tao Te-Chen): In 60's Taipei, a boy named Mau lives in his own little world and doesn't have any friends. He becomes friends with a girl, Hsiao Fen. However, their friendship doesn't last long; Hsiao Fen moves overseas with her parents. Mau is left behind with his loneliness and his dinosaur toy.
Section 2 (Dir. Edward Yang): Hsiao Fen is a primary schoolgirl growing up in the conservative society of Taiwan in the 60's. She shares carefree and happy times with a boy classmate, learning to ride a bicycle. The playmate dreams constantly of becoming a basketball player even though he is too short. Hsiao Fen harbours a secret love for a university student who lodges in her house. Eventually, she discovers that her elder sister and the university student are having an affair. So, added to a young girl's difficulties in growing up, is a deep and fresh scar.
Section 3 (Dir. Ko I-Chen): In 70's Taipei, Du is a college student wandering between reality and dreams. He works and sports back and forth, but he always feels as if he is stuck--as if he is nowhere. At last, he finds his dreams in a swimming race.
Section 4 (Dir.Zhang Yi): In 80's Taipei, a young couple has just moved into an apartment. The wife has also just begun her new job. On this morning, the young couple suffers from not being able to identify themselves....»
