Sinopsis momentánea en inglés: Based on a novel by Samaresh Basu, Ganga is the tale of the fishermen of the River Ganga - the Machhmara's. Its a gripping tale of the community, even as it focuses on Bilas (Niranjan Roy). the handsome young fisherman who dreams of leading the Machhmaras to new fishing grounds near the mount of the delta. In a sense it recounts how Bilas transforms from a young man to an adult - his coming into manhood. Its also the story of Himi (Ruma Guhathakurata), the rich and spirited girl who comes from a class that are not traditional fishermen. She loves Bilas, yet in the end has to give him up as he goes after his dreams. Its the tale of Gamli Panchi (Sandhya Roy) who is infatuated with Bilas, but it is a love Bilas does not reciprocate. We see the life of wise old Panchu - Bilas' uncle who has brought him up. But above all its a tale of the river and the folks that depend on it - as one of the fisherfolk puts it - the river is at once the mother and the doom of the Machhmaras.
