Descripción momentánea en inglés: Nugroho turns his attention to the predominantly Christian province of Papua (aka Irian), where the charismatic Theys Eluay, non-violent leader of the independence movement, died in military custody in 2001. A strand of documentary runs through the film – it includes Nugroho's encounter with Eluay himself and a visit to the Free Papua Organisation base in Waris – but most of it is fiction, acted by local Papuans.

The 'birdman' is Bertold, a teacher of cassowary dance and supporter of Eluay, who goes into hiding after Eluay's arrest. Meanwhile his teenage son Arnold is feeling the first stirrings of puberty; he becomes obsessed with a woman he saw getting off the ferry, a woman who’s forever buried in the Bible and crying...
