Every year Tokyo’s Pia Film Festival (PFF) awards one scholarship to a promising new filmmaker and covers the funding of their next feature film. To give you an idea of how important this has been, past scholarship recipients include Sion Sono, Ryosuke Hashiguchi, Shinobu Yaguchi, and Sang-Il Lee. This year’s PFF Scholarship film is Takatsugu Naito’s The Dark Harbor (Futoukou).

38-year-old fisherman Manzo Ishiguro (Shinya Kote) is a bachelor. Every day he goes out to sea on the fishing boat he inherited from his father and casts his net, but he can’t seem to shake his loneliness. One day his port town holds a party for prospective brides from Tokyo to meet eligible bachelors. There aren’t a lot of girls who are willing to marry small-town guys, so the men are desperate to impress them. Manzo dresses to impress (he thinks) but the outing proves to be a complete failure. Soon after, mysterious mother and son Mitsuko (Yuko Miyamoto) and Masao (Kazuki Hirooka) suddenly appear in his house unexpectedly. At first he shoos away the unwanted invaders, but eventually his longing for a family leads to an unlikely new living arrangement. Unfortunately the makeshift family atmosphere doesn’t exactly work out like Manzo expects.

He aprovechado la traducción de rayorojo para poder verla. Me ha parecido estupenda, una película llena de detalles que trascurre entre imágenes ingeniosas y un punto de humor (entremezclado por el carácter perdedor del protagonista y una muy acertada carga de emotividad), el desarrollo se muestra más apoyado en la imagen que en la palabra, cuenta con una atractiva estética que dota de personalidad al conjunto, además las interpretaciones se adaptan perfectamente al estilo del film.
