Sinopsis momentánea en inglés: Ebihara (Ichiro Ryuzaki) is a budding novelist entangled in a complicated web of relationships with three women from three different generations: Kazue (Rieko Sumi), a coquettish teenage war orphan who tries to offer herself for money but is instead taken in by Ebihara, Koyabu (Ozu regular Haruko Sugimura), a middle-aged woman who has spent much of her life as the kept woman of a wealthy man, and Teruko (Setsuko Hara), the modest daughter of Ebihara's former teacher who comes to rely on him after the death of her father.

Based on a newspaper serial by Gishu Nakayama and adapted by four members of the Japan Writers Guild (including the prolific Kaneto Shindo), the film was ranked tenth on Kinema Junpo's best ten list for 1950 and was screened at the yearly national festival of the arts, but was seldom seen afterwards until a copy was recently secured from a private collector residing in the Kansai area. It's bold treatment of sexuality is especially noteworthy for a Japanese film from the early 50s.

¡Muchísimas gracias, Danyyyy! ¡Inesperado y muy oportuno regalo! Por supuesto que la veré; ¡cuando de Setsuko se trata, no hay ausencia de subs que valga! 

Según mis listas, es la peli que estrenó inmediatamente (en octubre de 1950) antes de Hakuchi (The Idiot) de Kurosawa (5/51), y cuarta después de Banshun de Ozu (9/49). (Las otras tres de momento siguen missing.) Peli nº 75 de Setsuko según la no 100% fiable lista de jmdb. Que haya salido ésta es muy de celebrar porque justo las que faltan de 1945 a 1962 –fecha en que Hara dejó eso del cine–, que son entre treinta y cuarenta nada menos, son las más reticentes (por motivos de copyright, imagino) a ir saliendo. Estupendo pues 

Ah, añado en el reparto a Ichiro Ryuzaki (el «noviete» de Setsuko en Blue Mountains) y a la infalible Haruko Sugimura
