Uncommon romantic comedy is the name of the game in Bakery Amour. Character actor Francis Ng is paired with the amazingly beautiful Michelle Reis in this sleepy charmer from director Law Kit Sing. Francis Ng is Uncle Jet, a slightly dopey New Territories hick who befriends his new neighbor Lok To (Michelle Reis). She's heartbroken over losing communication with her boyfriend, who reputedly sent her ninety-nine letters. They never arrived, but Uncle Jet manages to find them stolen by a former neighbor who coveted the stamps. The letters reveal her ex's true feelings, but it may be too late. As silent compensation, Uncle Jet helps Lok To reopen her favorite bakery, and before long it becomes a success. But her ex-boyfriend makes a surprise return, which may not sit well with Uncle Jet. Usually intense Francis Ng turns in a subtle, engaging performance as a surprising romantic lead, and Michelle Reis is elegant and charming as the object of his affections. Like some of Lok To's culinary creations, Bakery Amour is sweet, warm and satisfying.
